Vaccines are best administered by your local veterinarian, which can determine and administer a vaccination program best suited to your horse’s individual needs. Follow your veterinarian’s recommendations. However, if you must vaccinate your horse yourself, these guidelines can make the process easier for you and your horse.

Follow these steps for safe, effective vaccination.

Carefully read all label directions for proper handling, administration and dosage. If you have any questions, call your veterinarian before administering the vaccine.
Intramuscular (IM) is the most common administration route. Injecting the vaccine deeply into a large, active muscle mass helps promote vaccine absorption.
A common injection site is the triangle of muscle at the base of the neck.
Ask your veterinarian for alternative injection sites.
Insert the needle quickly and decisively, perpendicular to the skin (not slanted upward or downward), all the way to the hub.
Pull back slightly on plunger. If you see blood, remove the needle and try again. If you do not see blood, go ahead and depress the plunger all the way.
Do not reuse the same needle or syringe.
Properly dispose of needles and syringes in a medical waste container.
